Dysport®

Dysport Frequently Asked Questions

At In My Own Skin Aesthetic Services and Spa of Lake Oswego, OR, men and women are often seeking anti-aging solutions to improve their appearance and restore their youth. While plastic surgery may be an option, it is not the only one! Thanks to continued advances in the field of cosmetics, you can enjoy a non-invasive alternative to reducing the appearance of wrinkles using Dysport® injections.

What Is Dysport®?

Dysport® is a type of injectable neuromodulator similar to Botox®. It works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles in targeted areas, thereby smoothing out wrinkles and creating a more youthful appearance. Dysport® is FDA approved to treat the glabella, or between the brows, but can also be used safely off label in areas like the forehead, crow's feet, upper lip, chin and more.

Applications for Dysport Injectable

Medically, Dysport injectable is used to treat excessive underarm sweating; symptoms of cervical dystonia, which include neck pain and abnormal head position; and muscle spasms. Cosmetically, Dysport injections are used to treat the following:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow‘s feet
  • Skin bands on the neck

Dysport Injectable Procedure and Results

Using a very fine needle, Dysport injectable is placed directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. No anesthetic is required, but some doctors choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to 4 months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. Injections should be given only by qualified medical professionals.

Candidates for Dysport Injectable

According to the manufacturer‘s website, candidates for Dysport injectable are “adults less than 65 years of age” who want “temporary improvement in the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).” It may not be suitable for those with the following:

  • Allergies to Dysport injectable or its ingredients
  • An allergy to cow‘s milk protein
  • Surgical facial changes
  • Very weak muscles in the treatment area
  • A face that looks very different on each side
  • Inflammation or infection in the area to be injected
  • Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds
  • Deep facial scars
  • Thick, oily skin
  • Wrinkles that cannot be smoothed when spread apart

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or has a neuromuscular disease, should not receive Dysport injectable.

What concerns Can Dysport® Treat?

Dysport® is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines and crow’s feet. It can also be used for a non-surgical brow lift, creating a more refreshed appearance.

What Is the Difference Between Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport®?

Both Dysport® and Botox® are neuromodulators that work in the same way to temporarily paralyze muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. However, each product is made from a different type of protein and may have slightly different results and dosing. At In My Own Skin Aesthetic Services and Spa, our skilled injectors can help determine which option is best for your unique situation and aesthetic goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dysport®?

If you are looking for a non-invasive solution to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, Dysport® may be a good option for you. Most adult patients with mild to moderate wrinkles will find Dysport® to be a reliable and effective way to smooth them away and restore a youthful appearance. It is important to note that results do not last forever, and regular maintenance injections will be necessary to maintain your desired results. Maintenance treatments are typically every 3-4 months.

How Do I Prepare for My Dysport® Appointment?

Prior to your Dysport® appointment, you will need to disclose any medication or supplement use as well as any allergies or medical conditions. It is also recommended that you avoid alcohol, fish oil supplements, and other blood thinning medications like anti-inflammatories, if approved by your doctor, for at least 48 hours before your appointment.

What Should I Expect After Receiving Dysport® Injections?

Following your injections, there may be temporary redness and swelling at the injection sites. You should avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and lying down for four to six hours after treatment to ensure optimal results. Results will typically appear within three days, but can take two weeks to see full results lasting up to four months before maintenance injections are needed. You can schedule your next injection before you leave our office to ensure you maintain the changes over time. While we cannot stop the process of aging, Dysport® can gradually slow the formation of fine lines and wrinkles caused by muscle tension in the face and delay the need for more invasive surgeries.
