How does it work?
The SmartSkin™ laser is a fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) ablative laser. It works by splitting up the laser into smaller beams that can penetrate the skin at a precise and controlled depth. The heat will then vaporize the cells that have been specifically targeted. The areas of skin around each fractionated beam will remain untouched. Only 20-30% of the treated area actually comes in contact with the laser beam, however the whole area will benefit and undergo rejuvenation. Since less skin is affected, the recovery time tends to be shorter than with the non-fractional CO2 lasers. The SmartSkin™ CO2 laser treatment in Portland normally begins with the application of a topical numbing medication. The laser scanner will gently emit small pulses of energy that target the outer layers of the skin (epidermis) and stimulate the underlying collagen. This procedure may take 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on the number of areas involved. Most patients experience some redness and crusting of the skin, as well as the feeling of a mild sunburn. Patients may be able to see some immediate benefits following their treatment, but skin rejuvenation will continue with the healing process as the collagen is restored and skin tone and texture improve.
